September - Must-Have Monthly Convo

Mental health. This is a term we've all heard many times, and most likely know it is a growing concern in today's society. But do we truly understand what it is? Maybe, maybe not. One thing is for certain though. As each day passes with more and more mental illness diagnoses, suicides and mass-shooting events, it is critical for each and every one of us to make a choice to be aware of & informed about this important topic.

Webster's Dictionary defines the term Mental health as "the condition of being sound mentally and emotionally that is characterized by the absence of mental illness and by adequate adjustment especially as reflected in feeling comfortable about oneself, positive feelings about others, and the ability to meet the demands of daily life". Whoa. Let's break that down a bit...

Mental health is:

  • stable thoughts without mental illness
  • stable emotions without mental illness
  • caring about yourself
  • caring about others
  • appropriately pivoting with the high's & low's of life
http://teenmentalhealth.org states that "Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being, which means it affects how we think, feel, and act." Did you catch that? How we think, feel and act! Each one of those is huge all on its own, much less the combination of all three. No wonder mental health is so incredibly important.

Please access our Zoom Webinar on Monday, Sept. 14 at 8pm to join a panel of Humble ISD & local mental health professionals, KHS counselors, staff and students as we aim to unpack key components of understanding & awareness. We challenge you to use this opportunity to explore where there may be gaps, biases or judgements in your own thoughts regarding mental health, all in a safe environment that seeks to encourage & uphold one another.

November - Cultural Diversity

We've heard a lot about Cultural Diversity in our society lately. Have you ever considered what it means to you? Does it mean Taco Tuesday? Photo shoots at mural walls throughout the different wards of HTX? Does it mean visiting other countries, learning some history & language and enjoying the authentic food? Or is it something on a much more personal level where actual people of other cultures intersect with your life in a way where you're not out "visiting" their culture, but you're allowing them to move in & live with you in your heart and mind? The truth of the matter is Cultural Diversity is strikingly beautiful and tragically ugly at the same time. There is nothing more harmonious than a diverse group of people who truly accept and care for one another, no matter the typical details people tend to get sticky about. Sadly, many times people fail to see the beauty of diversity, thus creating the ugly. In November, we aim to disentangle what the broad ...

January - Human Trafficking Awareness

Blog Takeover by the KHS Project Protect Our Children Human Trafficking Awareness Club ! Fact: Human trafficking is modern day slavery and one of the fastest growing risks to students. It is also the fastest-growing organized criminal activity in the United States and is making over $32 billion a year for traffickers while destroying the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent children. This is why it is so important to arm students, parents, school educators and our community with the knowledge needed to identify and prevent child sex trafficking, exploitation and abuse. Prevention is everything and together, through education, we can prevent the crime before it happens. Change can happen with training on human trafficking and raising awareness. Members of the KHS Project Protect Our Children Human Trafficking Awareness Club are using our passion to make a difference, and are quickly becoming champions in the fight against human trafficking. Throughout January, we are bringing Hum...

April - Eat, Sleep, Speak: Why What We Eat & How We Sleep Rules What We Say

Eat, Sleep, Speak:  Why What We Eat & How We Sleep Rules What We Say Picture this: It's 6pm, and you have a major class presentation tomorrow. You're hangry and wishing you could just crash since you've been awake since 5:30am and already had a full day of classes, sports practice and fine art practice. But sleep is not in the cards of your immediate future. You still have hours of homework to complete, that presentation to fine tune, and a desperate need of a shower. Dad's working late and mom has a headache. Looks like you're on your own for dinner. A big bowl of buttery popcorn & M&M's with a side of sugary cereal it is. Now picture this: It's 6pm, and you have a major class presentation tomorrow. You're hangry and understand you must crash soon since you've been awake since 5:30am and already had a full day of classes, sports practice and fine art practice. You planned ahead all week to get in front of your homework grind knowing ...
